Darren Woodhead - Artist - Tweed Art - Peebles

His work is held in many private collections, including recently a commission for the Duke of Edinburgh’s 90th birthday. He won the prestigious Swarovski / Birdwatch magazine Artist of the Year in 2009 which was awarded at The Mall Galleries, London. The winning painting ‘Lapwing Group’, is a centrepiece of the new publication. He was also a winner of this award in 1999.

He exhibits widely, including solo shows at The Donald Watson Gallery, Waterston House, Aberlady, Henderson Gallery, Edinburgh, Mchardy’s Gallery Peebles, Carlops Village Hall, Borders, Birdscapes Gallery, Norfolk, Minsmere RSPB reserve, Suffolk. He has also shown at The Dancing Light Gallery, Borders, Fie Fi Foe Fum Gallery, Borders, House of Bruar, Perthshire, Nature in Art, Gloucs.

Elected a member of The Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) in 2000, Darren has served on its council and has been an active member of many of the SWLA’s projects, including the New Forest (2001) and Aig on Oir (2004/2005). He has won many awards which have seen him invited onto expeditions and projects with The Artists for Nature Foundation to the Spanish Pyrenees (2001), Portuguese Algarve (2002), Peru and Ecuador (2003), Great Fen (2004/2005) Israel (2010) and Sark (2011).

He lectures nationally and has taught at Edinburgh College of Art from 2001 and currently combines his painting with teaching at both George Watson’s College, Edinburgh and Loretto’s School, Musselburgh. He has been a tutor on the Seabird Drawing Course held by John Busby in North Berwick since 2004. He featured on the BBC Scotland Programme Landward in October 2010, as well as broadcasted on BBC Radio Scotland as part of his Artist in Residence postion.

Darren currently resides with his wife Pascale and three small sons Corin, Keelan and Aiden in Haddington, and was invited by Simon King to feature on his new venture, the Wildlife Whisperer website.

Darren Woodhead was born in West Yorkshire in 1971, but has lived in Scotland since 1996. He is a graduate of the Royal College of Art in London. All his work are watercolours, produced outside on location and drawn directly in brush.

By working direct from life, he aims to retain the freshness and energy that working outside gives, and revels in working in often extreme weather conditions.

Recently he published his second solo book ‘Up River, The Song of the Esk’ bringing together three years work from an appointed Artist in Residence position in the Scottish Borders. His first solo book ‘From Dawn Till Dusk’ published by Langford Press in autumn 2005 celebrated the wealth of natural history found along the forth as well as the Lammermuir Hills and the west coast. His paintings and drawings also feature in Drawing Birds by John Busby (2004).

Barbara enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age, but it was not until she met her husband, Marc Sewell, that she began serious art study. It was under the guidance and encouragement of David Holmes that Barbara learned how to combine colours and experiment with them. Her latest work shows the results of this learning curve.
Barbara draws her inspiration from nature. Her work reflects her spontaneous emotional response to her surroundings. She has been influenced by the works of Keith Vaughan, Peter Lanyon and the French painter, Pascal Magis, but she has certainly managed to find her own style and voice.
Having moved back to The Borders, Barbara’s work reflects an emotional response to the beautiful landscape and colours that surround her in Innerleithen.

Ken Ferguson

Ken was born and brought up in Edinburgh and now lives in Innerleithen in the Scottish Borders.

After studying chemistry at Edinburgh University, he began painting in the early 1980’s and became a full time artist in 1990. He has been drawn to the west coast and mountains of Scotland and much of his work explores the open space of mountain tops and coastlines.

Margaret was born in Dunfermline, Fife, and qualified as a primary school teacher where an ability to draw and paint was extremely useful. After her marriage to Mike and the birth of their two children she returned in earnest to her artistic work, concentrating on watercolours, with landscapes and flowers being favourite subjects.
She first exhibited in Cyprus where the family lived for 3 years in the’70s, and Mike’s subsequent Army postings around the world gave her opportunities to paint and exhibit in Hong Kong and Germany – she even staged an exhibition for the expatriate community in Canton in China in 1985, just as that country was re-opening to the west.
When Mike retired from the Army the family moved to Edinburgh, and the main inspiration for her present work is the Scottish landscape and its ever-changing light, weather and seasonal colours. In recent years she has branched out into pastel, mixed media and printmaking, mainly using linocuts.
